The Solution

The Trentonian features an article this morning by Sherrina Navani about yesterday’s installment of “Ask The Mayor, but He Will Ignore You.”

The headline pretty much captures the tone of the morning Q & No A session: “Mack Losing Patience with Questions by Citizens, Press.” Apparently the Current Occupant got pretty testy about all the questions he was getting about the rampant crime (including his alleged ones and those of his family and friends) in town. At one point, he even threatened to dis-invite the media: “I think moving forward we will only have residents attend this meeting, because I think you are using the press here,” he said, showing that his skin has thinned to less than a millimeter.

His attitude reminds me of the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. Back in 1953, while East Germany was controlled by a ruthless Stalinist Communist government, there were several severe but rare demonstrations and even riots. The Communist government, instead of considering the demonstrations as legitimate protests against dictatorship, blamed the people for their uprest.

Brecht responded by saying, “Would it not be easier in that case for the government to dissolve the people and elect another?”

And here we have The Perfect Solution for the CO. If he has problems with his residents and the local press, he should fire them (or lay them off, which seems to be his strong suit) and hire his own. “The Mayor’s Own Loyalists and Choir” who will be glad to only ask The Questions It Is Permitted to Ask, and to be satisfied when told, “We’ll get back to you with the answer.”

What an asshole.
